Built-In Sales Tax Rules vs Avalara or TaxJar: Which to Use
Both options run inside Biznsbook Taxation and post to the same tax lines, returns and settlement journal. The choice is who works out the rate on a sale: the jurisdiction rules from the Canada or US pack, with local rates you import, or your own Avalara AvaTax or TaxJar account working from the address.

Where the built-in rules are enough
For Canada, the Canada pack covers GST, HST, QST and the provincial sales taxes by province, with return lines for the GST34, QST and PST returns. Most Canadian businesses do not need a provider for that.
For a US business registered in one or a few states, the US pack installs those states with their rates and taxability rules, and you import the city, county and district rates for the ZIPs you ship to. Charge only where registered keeps tax off states where you have no nexus.
The rules are effective-dated, a rule you edit is kept when the pack is reinstalled, and the Tax Simulator shows which rule applied to a line and why.
Where a provider earns its place
Once you are registered in many states, keeping local rates current by ZIP becomes the larger task. Biznsbook does not ship official local rate tables, so every change is a row you import.
A provider works out state, county, city and district tax from the address. Biznsbook posts each of those on its own components, so the return lines, the dashboard and the settlement journal look the same as with rules.
Posted sale invoices are recorded with the provider every 15 minutes or on Sync now, recorded again if their tax changes, and voided when cancelled, so the provider’s own filing reports see them.
What stays on the rules either way
Purchases and tax-inclusive prices are priced by the jurisdiction rules even with a provider connected. Use tax on purchase bills is worked out from the rules at the receiving warehouse.
Sale returns and POS sales are not sent to the provider yet. POS sales are taxed at the store.
If the provider cannot be reached, the sale is taxed with the rules and flagged, unless you untick Fall back to jurisdiction rules. In that case the sale cannot be saved until the provider answers.
What to check before switching
Switching to a provider needs at least one active rule, a provider, and its credentials, plus the account id and company code for Avalara. Install the US pack for your states first, so the fallback and purchases have rules.
Start in Sandbox, post and cancel a few invoices, and read provider reconciliation: Recorded, Voided, Failed with the error, or Pending. Failed invoices are retried up to 8 times, and Record again retries one.
Documents already posted keep their tax when you change method. Only new documents use the provider.
What neither option does
Biznsbook does not file returns with a tax authority or register you in a state. It prepares the return lines and exports them as PDF or Excel.
Neither method is tax advice. The Canada and US packs are drafts until a tax adviser reviews them, and the starting provider tax codes for item categories should be checked against the provider’s catalogue.
Pricing honesty
Biznsbook publishes Starter at $19, Pro at $39 and Business at $89 a month, and Accounting and Taxation are included in every plan. Connecting Avalara AvaTax or TaxJar needs no extra Biznsbook module, but it does need your own account with the provider, priced by the provider. Check /pricing.html and the provider’s own site before you decide. This page does not quote provider prices.

Frequently asked questions
Can I start with rules and switch to a provider later?
Yes. Posted documents keep their tax, and new documents use the new method. Keep the rules installed: they are the fallback and still price purchases.
Does Biznsbook include an Avalara or TaxJar subscription?
No. You connect your own account. There is no extra Biznsbook module for it, and Accounting and Taxation are included in every Biznsbook plan.
Do returns change if I use a provider?
No. The provider’s state and local taxes are posted on Biznsbook components, so filing periods, return lines and the settlement journal work the same way.
Should a Canadian business connect a provider?
Usually the Canada pack is enough: it charges GST, HST, QST and PST by province and fills the return lines. The provider option is aimed at US businesses selling into many states.
