How to Split a Bill at the POS
Groups at the counter turn one sale into a queue of calculator maths
Three people share one basket and want to pay their own part. The cashier divides the total on a phone calculator, a cent is left over, and the queue behind them waits while somebody agrees to cover it.
One person pays cash and another wants to use a card. On a till that only takes one payment per sale, the cashier voids the sale and rings it twice, or keys part of it as a discount to make the numbers work.
Colleagues buying together each need their own receipt for expenses or for a later return. Without a way to split the cart, the items are rung up again on new sales, and stock and takings drift from what was actually sold.
Why this happens
- Dividing the total by hand, so the shares do not add up to the bill.
- Voiding and re-ringing a sale just to take two payment methods.
- Re-keying items on a second cart instead of moving them between bills.
- Giving one receipt for a shared bill with no record of who paid what.
Biznsbook addresses this through split between people, split bill into separate receipts, who paid what on the receipt on the till itself when the POS module is licensed — the cashier never leaves the sale screen, and every fix, return and drawer movement stays tied to the cashier session.
A till that cannot fix its own mistakes pushes every correction to the back office, where nobody remembers the sale. Keeping fixes, returns and drawer movements on the till, each recorded against the cashier session, keeps stock, the ledger and the cash count telling the same story.
Step-by-step: Split a Bill at the POS
Built for retailers who need a fast till, float discipline, and the same INV-* sale bill in stock and GL — not a standalone cash register.
- Ring up the whole order. Scan or search every item onto one cart as usual, adding line notes where needed. Ask whether the group wants one shared bill or separate bills.
- Open checkout and choose Split between people. For one shared bill, press F8 for checkout and tap Split between people. Choose how many people are paying.
- Tap Split equally. Biznsbook divides the total so the shares always add up to the cent, with no leftover amount to chase.
- Take each share the way that person pays. Each share can be paid a different way: one in cash with their own change, another by card. The receipt lists who paid what.
- For separate bills, tap Split bill. Under the cart, tap Split bill and choose between two and six bills. Tap a bill letter on each line to move units to that bill.
- Pay bill A, then the next bill. Bill A goes to checkout. When it is paid, its receipt prints and bill B loads into the cart automatically.
- Hand over the receipts. A shared bill prints one receipt listing each payer. Separate bills each print their own receipt with the bill number as a barcode for returns.
Review results after the first full weekly cycle. Adjust roles, mappings, or approvals where the same exception repeats.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Mistake 1: Dividing the total by hand, so the shares do not add up to the bill. Repeating this each month usually shows up first in cash reconciliation and till speed.
- Mistake 2: Voiding and re-ringing a sale just to take two payment methods. Repeating this each month usually shows up first in cash reconciliation and till speed.
- Mistake 3: Re-keying items on a second cart instead of moving them between bills. Repeating this each month usually shows up first in cash reconciliation and till speed.
- Mistake 4: Giving one receipt for a shared bill with no record of who paid what. Repeating this each month usually shows up first in cash reconciliation and till speed.
Note each recurring exception on the session review; each should map to a till setting or a step in this guide.
Best practices that hold up as you scale
- Ring up the whole order — Scan or search every item onto one cart as usual, adding line notes where needed.
- Open checkout and choose Split between people — For one shared bill, press F8 for checkout and tap Split between people.
- Tap Split equally — Biznsbook divides the total so the shares always add up to the cent, with no leftover amount to chase.
- Take each share the way that person pays — Each share can be paid a different way: one in cash with their own change, another by card.
- For separate bills, tap Split bill — Under the cart, tap Split bill and choose between two and six bills.
Teams that open on a named register, park holds, and close with expected cash keep variance disputes short.
How Biznsbook supports this workflow
split between people is part of the Biznsbook POS till. It runs on the till page itself, so the cashier never leaves the sale screen or re-keys anything in the back office, and the record stays tied to the cashier session it happened in.

Everything here runs on the till page from the Actions button (Ctrl+K). Payments → Till settings holds the limits and Payments → Session review holds the audit; use the Help Center for click-level screens.
Suggested implementation timeline
- Week 1: Review Payments → Till settings: cashier limits, correction window, return policy, notes and coins, and the reasons cashiers pick.
- Week 2: Train cashiers on the Actions button (Ctrl+K) and split between people on one register.
- Week 3: Make sure each manager has a 4-digit POS PIN and agree which actions need their approval.
- Week 4: Open the session review after each close: counted against expected cash, voids, corrections and approvals.
- Ongoing: Weekly review using which split to choose and the Till Activity block on the session Z-report.
Moving units between bills
Split bill works on units, not only on whole lines. If three of the same item sit on one line, you can move one unit to bill B and leave two on bill A by tapping the bill letter on that line. Choose between two and six bills, check what is on each, then send bill A to checkout.
When bill A is paid, its receipt prints straight away and bill B loads into the cart, ready for the next payment. Each bill gets its own receipt with the bill number printed as a barcode, so a later return can be scanned against exactly the right sale instead of a shared one.
Fixing a split after it is paid
If something goes wrong after a bill is paid, the fix still happens at the till. Actions → Correct a bill lets the cashier remove an item scanned twice, add a missed item, or change how the bill was paid. A posted bill is never edited: each fix is a linked return or a linked sale, so stock and the ledger stay correct.
Inside the correction window, which is 15 minutes by default in the same session, a cashier can fix their own bill alone. After that, or for another cashier’s bill, a manager approves on the spot with their 4-digit POS PIN, and the approval is logged with both names.
Metrics to track monthly
- Corrections, voids and returns per session (Till Activity block on the session Z-report)
- Cash variance per session on the session review
- Manager approvals per shift
- Pay-outs and cash drops against the drawer cash limit
- Lines removed before payment
Start with three metrics; trend direction matters more than a single point-in-time snapshot.
Manual till workarounds vs the Biznsbook POS till
Compare common paper and back-office workarounds with Biznsbook split between people and related till capabilities.
| Capability | Manual / Spreadsheet | Biznsbook |
|---|---|---|
| Even shares | ❌ Calculator at the counter, a cent left over | ✅ Split equally; shares add up to the cent |
| Different payment methods | ❌ Void and ring the sale twice | ✅ Each person pays their own way on one bill |
| Change for one payer | ❌ Worked out by hand | ✅ Change shown for that person’s cash share |
| Separate bills | ❌ Re-key items on new carts | ✅ Move units to bill A, B and so on with a tap |
| Receipts | ❌ One receipt, handwritten notes | ✅ Who paid what, or one receipt per bill |
| Later returns | ❌ Hunt for the right sale | ✅ Each receipt carries its bill number barcode |
Which split to choose
Use Split between people when the group is happy with one receipt and only the payment is shared, such as a family shop or a team lunch. Use Split bill when each person needs a receipt of their own, for expenses or to return their own items later. Both start from the same cart, so nothing is rung up twice.
Write this into your till procedures and revisit it when you add registers, change cashier limits or update Till settings.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Split between people and Split bill?
Split between people keeps one bill and one receipt, paid in several shares. Split bill turns one cart into two to six separate bills, each paid and printed on its own receipt.
Can one person pay cash and another pay by card?
Yes. Each share of a Split between people payment can use a different method, and the cash share gets its own change.
Do equal shares ever leave a cent over?
No. Split equally makes the shares add up to the bill total to the cent.
How many separate bills can I make?
Between two and six. Tap a bill letter on each line to move units there. Bill A goes to checkout first, and the next bill loads automatically when it is paid.
Is this the same as the F11 split key?
F11 opens a split payment for one customer paying part cash and part card. Split between people is for several people sharing one bill, and it lists each payer on the receipt.
What if a split bill was paid wrongly?
Use Actions → Correct a bill. You can change the payment method, remove an item scanned twice or add a missed one, and each fix is recorded as a linked return or sale.
