How to Keep Selling When the Internet Goes Down
Why an outage costs more than the sales you miss
Most shops lose the internet a few times a year: a router fails, the provider has an outage, or the Wi-Fi is up but has no connection behind it. A cloud till that needs the server for every sale stops at the worst moment, usually with a queue at the counter.
The usual workarounds are worse than the outage. Staff write sales on paper and key them in later, so some are typed twice and some never. Customers are turned away. Or the cashier rings sales on a phone app that does not talk to stock or the books, and the day never reconciles.
What a shop needs is a till that keeps taking the payments it can safely take without the server, keeps a clear record of what is waiting, and posts every sale exactly once when the connection returns, with the same stock and accounting as any other sale.
Why this happens
- Offline work was never turned on, so the till cannot queue sales.
- The till was not opened online on that browser, so items and prices are not on the device.
- Cashiers take card payments that cannot be authorised offline.
- Paper notes are keyed in later and some sales are entered twice.
- Nobody checks the sales that synced but could not be posted.
Biznsbook addresses this through offline cash sales at the till, OFF- receipts that become invoices on sync, Sync Center queue, sync exceptions for a manager once a Company Admin turns offline work on, with every queued sale posted on the server like any other sale.
An outage is short; the clean-up after it is what costs time. Keeping the work on the device and posting it once on sync leaves nothing to re-key.
Step-by-step: Keep Selling When the Internet Goes Down
Written for shop owners and store managers using Biznsbook POS, and the warehouse teams using Fast Receive, Receive transfers and Fast Dispatch.
- Turn offline work on. Go to Management → Offline settings, turn Offline work on, leave Point of Sale on, set Maximum hours offline (4 to 168, starting at 72) and save. Other companies are not affected.
- Open the till online once. Open the till in Chrome or Edge, sign in and complete one cash sale while online, so the till downloads its items and prices. Installing the app from the browser prompt makes it easier to reopen.
- Keep selling in cash. When the banner says Offline. Your work stays on this device, ring the sale and take cash. Card, a card reader and a split that includes a card are refused until the till is online.
- Hand out the OFF- receipt. The receipt shows an OFF- reference and Pending sync. It is not the final invoice number; the badge counts how many sales are waiting.
- Let the sales sync. When the internet returns, the same person signs in if the till asks, and the waiting sales post on their own. Sync Center has Sync now and Export queue.
- Clear sync exceptions. Under Management → Sync exceptions, a parked sale (closed period, changed promotion, till limit) can be replayed after you fix the cause, or voided with a reason.
- Review browsers. Management → Offline devices lists each browser with its user, last sync and waiting sales. Revoke one that was lost or shared.
Review results after the first full after every outage cycle. Adjust roles, mappings, or approvals where the same exception repeats.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Mistake 1: Offline work was never turned on, so the till cannot queue sales. Repeating this each month usually shows up first in sales that are lost, keyed twice or never reconciled.
- Mistake 2: The till was not opened online on that browser, so items and prices are not on the device. Repeating this each month usually shows up first in sales that are lost, keyed twice or never reconciled.
- Mistake 3: Cashiers take card payments that cannot be authorised offline. Repeating this each month usually shows up first in sales that are lost, keyed twice or never reconciled.
- Mistake 4: Paper notes are keyed in later and some sales are entered twice. Repeating this each month usually shows up first in sales that are lost, keyed twice or never reconciled.
- Mistake 5: Nobody checks the sales that synced but could not be posted. Repeating this each month usually shows up first in sales that are lost, keyed twice or never reconciled.
Each of these turns a short outage into hours of reconciliation. Set offline work up in advance and check the queue after every outage.
Best practices that hold up as you scale
- Turn offline work on — Go to Management → Offline settings, turn Offline work on, leave Point of Sale on, set Maximum hours offline (4 to 168, starting at 72) and save.
- Open the till online once — Open the till in Chrome or Edge, sign in and complete one cash sale while online, so the till downloads its items and prices.
- Keep selling in cash — When the banner says Offline.
- Hand out the OFF- receipt — The receipt shows an OFF- reference and Pending sync.
- Let the sales sync — When the internet returns, the same person signs in if the till asks, and the waiting sales post on their own.
Turn offline work on before you need it and open each till online once, so the device already has its items and prices when the connection drops.
How Biznsbook supports this workflow
offline cash sales at the till is part of the Biznsbook POS till and warehouse screens. Work done offline is stored on the device and sent when the connection returns, and the server posts each sale, receipt or dispatch once, with the same stock, invoice numbers and journals as online work.

sync exceptions for a manager is part of the Biznsbook POS till and warehouse screens. Work done offline is stored on the device and sent when the connection returns, and the server posts each sale, receipt or dispatch once, with the same stock, invoice numbers and journals as online work.
Offline work is not a separate licence: it is part of POS and the warehouse screens. Managing devices and sync exceptions needs its own permission; Company Admins have it.
Suggested implementation timeline
- Day 1: Turn offline work on under Management → Offline settings and set the maximum hours offline.
- Day 2: Open every till online in Chrome or Edge and complete one cash sale so items and prices are on the device.
- Week 1: Rehearse offline cash sales at the till with Wi-Fi switched off, then watch the sales sync.
- Week 2: Give a manager the sync exceptions permission and show them Replay and Void.
- Ongoing: Checking offline sales after an outage.
Metrics to track monthly
- Sales waiting to sync on each till after an outage
- Parked and rejected rows in Sync exceptions
- Hours since each browser last synced
- Browsers revoked or unused for a month
Start with three metrics; trend direction matters more than a single point-in-time snapshot.
Paper workarounds vs the Biznsbook offline till
Compare what shops do by hand during an outage with Biznsbook offline cash sales at the till.
| Capability | Manual / Spreadsheet | Biznsbook |
|---|---|---|
| Selling during an outage | ❌ Paper notes keyed in later | ✅ Cash sales queued on the till |
| Receipt for the customer | ❌ Handwritten | ✅ OFF- receipt, real invoice number on sync |
| Double entry | ❌ Common when notes are re-keyed | ✅ Each queued sale posts once |
| Knowing what is waiting | ❌ Guesswork | ✅ Pending count and Sync Center |
| Sales that cannot post | ❌ Found at month end | ✅ Sync exceptions for a manager |
| Lost or shared device | ❌ Nothing to do | ✅ Revoke the browser |
Checking offline sales after an outage
After each outage, open Sync Center on every till to confirm nothing is still waiting, then open Sync exceptions. Replay parked sales once the cause is fixed, void the ones that should not post with a reason, and search Sales by OFF- reference if a customer brings back a receipt. Review Offline devices monthly and revoke browsers nobody uses.
Write the outage routine into your till procedures: cash only, OFF- receipts, and who checks Sync exceptions afterwards.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Biznsbook till work with no internet?
Cash sales do, once offline work is turned on and the till has been opened online at least once so items and prices are on the device. Card payments do not.
Why does the receipt not have the usual invoice number?
The server assigns the invoice number when the sale syncs. Until then the receipt shows an OFF- reference and Pending sync. You can search Sales by that reference later.
Are prices and tax right while offline?
The till uses the promotional prices and tax rates it downloaded the last time it was online. When the sale syncs, the server recalculates the tax and keeps a note if a price list was no longer valid; the sale still posts.
What happens if I close the browser?
Cash sales already queued stay on the device. Sign in again and let the till sync. If you sign out while sales are still waiting, the till warns you.
Can the warehouse work offline too?
Yes. With the warehouse option on, Fast Receive, Receive transfers and Fast Dispatch keep working offline and post once when the connection returns.
What cannot be done offline?
Card payments, till sessions, pay-ins and pay-outs, refunds and parked bills still need a connection, as does every other screen.
How this differs by industry
Retail
Corner shops and boutiques keep the queue moving through a broadband outage, give each customer an OFF- receipt, and see the day reconcile once the sales sync.
Wholesale & distribution
Trade counters keep taking cash while the warehouse keeps receiving and picking offline, with every receipt and dispatch posted once later.
Manufacturing
Factory shops keep selling seconds and offcuts during a site network outage without a paper sales book.
